Kokuyo Kadokeshi Eraser, Medium

A standard block eraser has eight corners. The Kadokeshi has 28. Designed by Hideo Kanbara and winner of the 2002 Kokuyo Design Award, the Kadokeshi solves one of erasing's most persistent frustrations: the corners and edges that make precise erasing possible wear down quickly, leaving you with a blunt, rounded block that smears more than it erases. The Kadokeshi's interlocking cube geometry multiplies the available corners dramatically — as one edge wears down, another is ready to take its place. The design was significant enough to be included in MoMA's 2004 "Humble Masterpieces" exhibition and now sits in the museum's permanent collection.

The eraser compound is a styrene elastomer resin — not-too-soft and not-too-hard, arrived at after many prototypes — that erases cleanly with light pressure and produces dust that clumps rather than scatters.
