Kokuyo Field Sketchbook – Grayish Blue (SE-Y7B)

The Kokuyo Field Sketchbook has been a staple of Japanese survey work since 1959, designed originally for engineers and field surveyors who needed a notebook they could write in while standing, one-handed, in any conditions. The SE-Y7B is the Grayish Blue colourway in the Basic series — a muted, dusty blue that sits closer to slate than sky, with a quiet, considered character that works as naturally in a studio or office as it does in the field. The fabric-on-paper cover gives it a soft, tactile finish while maintaining the structural rigidity that makes it functional under real working conditions. It has earned the 2015 Good Design Long Life Design Award, a recognition reserved for products that have remained essentially unchanged and continuously relevant across decades.

The 3mm grid is printed in light gray — fine enough to guide writing and diagramming precisely, and unobtrusive enough to recede behind handwriting on the page. The high-grade neutral paper handles pencils, ballpoints, gel pens, and light fountain pen use comfortably with minimal bleed-through or feathering. Saddle-stitched and compact at 160 × 91 mm, it slips into a coat pocket, a field bag, or the front slot of almost any notebook cover. A note on the cover: colour transfer to other surfaces may occur due to friction — worth keeping in mind when carrying alongside lighter-coloured items.
