KUM Sharpener AS3

The KUM AS3 is the sharpener that pencil people tend to land on once they decide a standard single-hole isn't doing the job anymore. It is a two-stage long point sharpener — the kind of tool that produces a dramatically longer, finer tip than any conventional sharpener can, and does it reliably and consistently every time. The process is deliberate by design: the first hole removes only the wood casing until the lead reaches an automatic stop, preventing further sharpening at that stage. The second hole then takes over, shaping the exposed lead to an exceptionally long, fine point at a shallow 9-degree angle. That low angle is what makes the tip last — a longer cone means less frequent resharpening and finer detail work between sessions.

The blade is high-carbon steel hardened to 65 HRC — harder than a ball bearing, and hard enough to cut cleanly through the graphite and clay mixture that makes up most pencil leads without tearing or crumbling the tip. The automatic stop in both stages prevents over-sharpening, protecting both the lead and the wood casing. The sharpener body has a flip-top lid with a small integrated shavings reservoir underneath, and two spare blades are stored inside the container — a practical touch that means the replacement is always exactly where you need it. Compatible with round, hexagonal, and triangular pencils in standard diameter.

One worth noting: the long, fine point the AS3 produces is best suited to quality pencils with well-centred, consistent leads. On lower-grade pencils with off-centre cores, results will vary.
