The LAMY Pico is one of those pens that earns a second look the moment someone picks it up. Closed, it is a compact capsule shape — just 9.4 cm long — sized to disappear into a trouser pocket, a shirt pocket, or the smallest compartment of a bag. Press the end once and the double-push mechanism extends both the barrel and the ballpoint tip simultaneously, transforming it into a full-size 12.6 cm ballpoint ready for comfortable writing. Press again and it retracts just as smoothly. The whole thing happens in a single finger movement, with no fumbling and nothing to uncap.
The design was created by Swiss designer Franco Clivio, who studied at the Ulm School of Design — the institution whose influence runs through much of LAMY's design language. The body is made from lacquer-coated plastic in a range of colours, with a small raised LAMY logo on the barrel that doubles as an anti-roll device, keeping the pen from sliding off a desk or table when set down. A detail that small is a good indicator of how considered the overall design is.
The Pico uses the LAMY M22 compact ballpoint refill, which comes loaded with black medium ink and is straightforward to replace when it runs out. Refills are available separately. Available in a wide range of colours.
